Description In order to minimize the size of isolated power converters and increase the robustness of their design, there has been an effort towards their miniaturization. As part of this effort, a complete new design paradigm needs to be followed in order to achieve the required performances in terms of efficiency and output power while fitting the complete solution (including the power transformer) inside a small package. The converters are thus designed to exploit high switching frequency and innovative resonant topologies to minimize high frequency switching losses and optimize performance.

The Master Thesis activities involve the analysis and design of new very high frequency DC/DC topologies and implementation of high frequency driver and rectifier integrated circuits that are optimized to resonantly operate in conjunction with miniaturized integrated transformers. The aim is to achieve best in class efficiency, output power, voltage regulation accuracy as well as being robust, ground noise immune and with low emission footprint.

The thesis can be carried out either internally at the University with close collaboration with Texas Instruments R/D department or directly inside the company European headquarters in Freising (Bavaria, Germany).

Required skills Good knowledge of analog design techniques
Basic knowledge of dc/dc converters
