Description This thesis plans to study the brain response to transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). TMS is widely used in clinical and rehabilitation settings to study certain diseases and help patients' recovery. It is not easy to figure out exactly which portion of the brain is being stimulated because it depends on complicated tissue geometry and electromagnetic parameters that are difficult to measure. Also, it is difficult to understand what functional responses develop, that is, which neural networks are activated and how. In this thesis, high-level instrumentation provided by GEA Soluzioni s.r.l. will be used to stimulate and monitor healthy subjects. Specifically, a TMS system will be used to stimulate the subject, and a high-density (128-channel) EEG system will be used to observe the cortical response. Source identification algorithms will be applied to identify from EEG the regions of the brain that are activated.
Required skills Mathematical models and signal processing.
Programming in Matlab.
