Thesis type EXPERIMENTAL, SIMULATION CFD
Description This thesis investigates droplet dynamics in the Spray-on-Screen (SoS) process, a cutting-edge technique for ultra-thin film deposition. SoS combines ultrasonic spray coating and mesh-induced dynamic wetting, focusing on the hydrodynamic behavior of droplets transitioning through mesh geometries (circular and rectangular) made from materials like polyester and stainless steel. Applications include, for example, advanced solar cells and OLEDs.
The analysis will focus on droplet movement, coalescence, and spreading influenced by mesh design and material properties, analyzing factors like droplet velocity, surface tension, and edge interactions. Experimental tests of the technique, as well as simulation activities using COMSOL Multiphysics can be considered for the development of this thesis depending on the interest of the candidate.
This thesis can be developed at the University of Hasselt (Belgium), within a typical timeframe of 4-6 months. The interested candidate will apply to a scholarship for thesis abroad (e.g. Erasmus+). The deadline for application is mid january 2025, and start of the activities is foreseen around february 2025.
Required skills Interest for the subject and for learning the use of COMSOL for fluid dynamic simulations
