Descrizione Devices have been developed to investigate the effect of strong magnetic fields on the growth of well-mixed (planktonic) and spatially structured (mats) yeast populations. Specifically, it was found that homogeneous magnetic fields between 500 G to 1500 G slowed the growth of yeast mats, but did not affect the growth of planktonic yeast populations. While the underlying mechanism remains to be uncovered, it has been hypothesized that these magnetic field effects result from the radical pair mechanism, which involves the quantum dynamics of the electron and nuclear spins of transient radical molecules. This project will involve building modified, open-source, and 3D-printed magnetic field exposure devices. These devices will be designed in AutoCAD, modeled in COMSOL Multiphysics, and validated using a Gaussmeter and experiments on the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The experiments will be performed between 0.25 G and 1000 G on planktonic S. cerevisiae and S. cerevisiae mats. The data generated from the experiments will be used to test the radical pair mechanism hypothesis. Overall, this project will our understanding of the magnetobiology of fungi.

Conoscenze richieste basic laboratory techniques and computer simulations

Note The student will spend a period of 6 months in the laboratory of Prof. Charlebois designing new experiments, performing experiments and simulating the biological system and its response to strong magnetic fields
