Description When increasing the transmission speed beyond 40 Gb/s per channel, the impact of linear and nonlinear fiber impairments increases as well, strongly affecting the system performance. A promising solution consists in reducing the symbol rate with the replacement of standard binary modulation formats with multi-level formats, enabled by the use of digital coherent receivers.
The proposed theses aim at theoretical and/or experimental investigation of the use of multilevel modulation formats, such as M-ary phase-shift keying (PSK) and quadrature-amplitude modulation (QAM), to enhance transmission speed over multi-span WDM optical systems.
Cooperation is possible with foreign institutions in the framework of the European Projects Euro-Fos and BONE, with the opportunity of fully funded short or extended stays abroad.
