Descrizione Decentralized and diverse, the Internet is resilient and universal. However, its distributed nature leads to operational brittleness and difficulty in identifying and tracking the root causes of performance and availability issues. The first step to improve this fragmentation is measurement: illuminating the currently obscure dynamics of the Internet. To address this, we advocate a measurement plane, or mPlane alongside the Internet’s data and control planes.
mPlane consists of a Distributed Measurement Infrastructure to perform active, passive and hybrid measurements; it operates at a wide variety of scales and dynamically supports new functionality. A Repository and Analysis layer collects, stores, and analyses the collected data via parallel processing and data mining. Finally, an Intelligent Reasoner iteratively drills down into the cause of an evidence, determining the conditions leading to given issues, and supporting the understanding of problem origins.
Traffic measurement is an applied networking research methodology aimed at understanding packet traffic on the Internet. From its humble beginnings in LAN-based measurement of network applications and protocols, network measurement research has grown in scope and magnitude, and has helped providing insight to fundamental properties of the Internet, its protocols, and its users. For example, Internet traffic measurement and monitoring serves as the basis for a wide range of IP network operations, management, engineering tasks such as trouble shooting, accounting and usage profiling, routing weight configuration, load balancing, capacity planning, and so forth.
In the context of the mPlane project (http://www.ict-mplane.eu), several thesis are available in the fields of Internet traffic characterization and classification. Here are some examples:
* Engineering of programmable passive probes
* Orchestration of distributed probe infrastructure
* Analysis of large data using BIG DATA technology
* Investigation of novel applications like Social Networks (Facebook, Twitter), Content Delivery Services (Akamai, Level3, ...), video streaming platforms (YouTube, SkyGo,...)
Conoscenze richieste Good knowledge of Internet protocols
Programmin skills (C, C++, scripting)
Average vote above 27/30
Note It is possible to do the thesis abroad in one of the mPlane partners' research centres/Universities.
See http://www.ict-mplane.eu for partner description.
