Description  Storage Area Networks (SANs), used in data centers to interconnect disks to to processes, are mostly based on specific networks and protocols like Fiber Channel, due to the high performance and reliability of this specialized architectures. However, today, thanks to the availability of the iSCSI protocol, IP-based Storage Area Networks are becoming more appealing because of the ever increasing diffusion of high-speed IP networks, mostly based on Ethernet technologies like 1/10 Gigabit Ethernet.

Furthermore, 10 Gigabit Ethernet networks are becoming appealing also in other application fields, like MAN and WAN networks, because they permit to realize carrier-grade networks using a easily configurable well-known technology like Ethernet; another important field of application is High-Performance Computing.

In our lab, hosted by ISMB (Istituto Superiore Mario Boella), a collection of high-end hardware and performance tools is available to test the iSCSI behaviour over 10 Gigabit Ethernet networks. The hardware already available in our lab includes an Agilent Router Tester, with electrical/optical interfaces at 10/100/1000 Mbit/s, an HP ProCurve switch 6400cl with 8 10Gbit/s ports (6 CX-4 + 2 optical), and a set of HPNC510C PCIe 10Gigabit server adapters with CX-4 connectors.

The main topics to be addressed during the thesis work are:

* evaluation of PCs equipped with 10 Gbit/s server adapters: configuration, throughput measurements, routing capabilities
* realization of a metropolitan test-bed in collaboration with CSI Piemonte, CSP and TOP-IX over a 1/10Gbit/s MAN

Required skills Good knowledge of networking protocols, basic knowledge of Linux-based systems (networking configuration) and basic/good knowledge of C/C++ programming.
