Thesis type URBAN PLANNING / URBAN DESIGN

Description The erosion of nineteenth-century forms of cohabitation has led to the invalidation of those references to community and family that had ensured the transmission of values and the clear delineation of city spaces.

During the Nineties the mechanisms of fragmentation and dissipation of the city were believed to be the clearest expression of this rupture. As such, great attention was given to investigate the implications of urban sprawl.

Observers of today’s city cannot help but note a new “shared living” turn, new in that they combine in part prior early-twentieth-century ideas of comunal space and with late-twentieth-century expressions of individualism. This new “shared living” is fragile and time-sensitive, regardless of the populations inhabiting it.
This seminar is configured as a collaborative site for the exploration and design of these new forms of sharing in the contemporary city and of the spaces (physical and social) that they occupy.

The seminar’s hypothesis is that these forms of sharing can lead to a major action plan, both for political action and for the technical competence of the architect and urbanist.

To complete a degree in this seminar inter-disciplinary investigation methods and non-traditional design approaches are required. The expertise of the teachers associated to this laboratory reflect these qualifications.
