Descrizione Intelligent environments, such as smart homes or domotic systems, allow complex control strategies to manage the various capabilities (lights, doors, temperature, power, music, ...) of a house or a building, by providing solutions that may be deployed already today. However, such environments often lack unobtrusive interaction methods, since smart home inhabitants usually should use touch screen panels or computers to perform different actions.

In this context, an unobtrusive and wearable object like a bracelet or a wrist watch, that lets users perform various operations in their homes and to receive notifications from the environment, could represent a strength point, in particular for those people not accustomed to using computer systems or in contexts where they are not in front of the screen.

ez430-ChronosThe purpose of this thesis is to design, develop and validate a wearable system (based on the Texas Instruments ez430-Chronos watch ) to control and manage domotic systems. The system should explore all the possibilities offered by the watch, for example by enabling a gesture-based interaction with the devices present in the home.
From the technical point of view, the activities range from developing custom watch firmware, to use signal processing algorithms for detecting useful information from the watch sensors, from devising efficient and effective user interfaces suitable with the limited capabilities of the device, to study multimodal interactions thanks to other devices available in the house, etc.

The outcome of the work will be validated by means of a user study and, if satisfying, will be made available as an Open Source project.

Note: due to its complexity, this thesis is also available for more than one student.
