Description chnologies are strongly dependent on the availability of machine-readable information in form of RDF/OWL triples. Such information can either be describing a knowledge domain, in terms of relevant entities and relationships (i.e., ontologies) or can describe domain-specific information objects (instances) referring to well known domain models, as in the Linked Open Data (LOD) initiative. In both cases, getting a quick overview of entities, relationships and instances involved by domain models or by LOD descriptions, is really difficult as the standard exchange language (RDF/OWL) is mainly designed for machines.
The purpose of this thesis is to design and implement a 2D/3D (optional) LOD/Ontology visualizer for Android-based mobile platforms. Such a visualization would dramatically improve usability of LOD data and of Semantic-based solutions in real-world applications and mash-ups, by enabling direct, tactile/sensible interaction with involved knowledge objects. The thesis will be exploiting the Android-porting of the well known Jena semantic web library (androjena) and the native graphics/audio/touch APIs provided by Google. The outcome of the work will be validated by means of a user study and, if satisfying, will be made available as an Open Source project. Possible evolutions of the thesis might involve the ability to perform CRUD (CReate, Update, Delete) operations on visualized data.
