Description Methodologies and tools for reducing/modifying energy consumption in smart homes and automated buildings are increasingly attracting interest from both researchers and the industry. To shape the next generation of energy consumers, new awareness shall be delivered and new, convincing, behaviors shall be encouraged. For this information to permeate the society a sound notion about current energy consumption degrees and behaviors must be acquired, in the real-world.
The purpose of this thesis is to design, assemble and deploy a (set of) portable energy profiler(s) able to capture most relevant (from the energy standpoint) behaviors and most greedy consumers (appliances) and to store such an information into a machine processable format (e.g., a database). The profiler might also include some basic actuation capability, such as turning loads on and off, and sensing, e.g., detecting user presence, etc. Technologies to adopted include Z-Wave devices, of which a minimum set shall be defined in the thesis, and the Dog gateway to gather energy and behavior information from the Z-Wave network. The thesis results will include one or more prototypes of such energy profiler and will analyze the outcomings of some real-world deployment. The work will be validated on the field and, if satisfying, will be made available as an Open Source, Do It Yourself project.
