Description In order to guarantee a proper thermal insulation of the indoor environments, overall during summer season, it is necessary to use not only envelope materials with low thermal conductivity, but also materials with high thermal inertia (density and specific heat).
Including PCMs (Phase Change Materials) in light building envelope elements with low thermal inertia, it is possible to improve the energy efficiency of the indoor environment without thickening the walls, thereby reducing the electricity consumption of the air conditioning systems.

PCMs are latent heat storage materials. During the warming phase, they store the heat while the temperature rises beyond the melting point, and, during the cooling phase, they release the heat while the temperature falls down under the melting point, PCMs automatically release the heat by becoming solid. In this way PCMs stabilize the indoor temperature during both summer and winter seasons.

Insulating envelope elements with high thermal capacity, such as PCM wallboards, can be applied for modular units, such as cool bags, electronic control units, display cabinets and refrigerators.

The objective of the thesis is to study a methodology for characterizing multiplex envelope elements in order to develop high thermal capacity sidewalls for small modular units, to model the system as a function of the material, of the environmental and geometrical parameters, and to verify the model on a prototype.

The research deals with:

• bibliographic research on latent heat storage materials and wallboards
• thermodynamic balance and mathematical modeling by MatLab and by thermal dynamic simulation environments
• envelope prototype design and building for experimental thermal characterization
• experimental validation of the models.
