Thesis type EXPERIMENTAL

Description Motivation:
Reconfigurable devices are increasingly used in space-applications, thus requiring innovative methodologies to increase their in-built dependability to tolerate faults in radiation harsh environments.
SRAM-based FPGA presents a set of features to be exploited in critical applications to mitigate single event upsets either in the configuration memory or in the programmable logic.

Goals:
The thesis aims at the development and the implementation of innovative fault-tolerant and fault-mitigation techniques for FPGA-based systems, to be applied in safety-critical applications (e.g., space exploration missions).
The methodology should be implemented and simulated on a Xilinx FPGA board and eventually validated by mean of several fault injection campaigns.

Learning Outcomes:
During this thesis the candidate will study several dependability techniques and the state-of-the-art on FPGA dependability.
Furthermore the whole FPGA design flow will be used, from the design to the final hardware test.

Required skills Description Languages: VHDL

Notes The thesis will be developed in cooperation with: ThalesAlenia Space S.p.A.
