Description Cloud computing platforms allow users to save hardware costs by running their applications on a remote side. This way, the execution of an application and the visualization of the output/results are decoupled on different machines. This vision is particularly challenging in the field of online gaming platforms, where remote rendering techniques are used to generate 3D content and feed the visualization pipeline on a "low end" - and cheap - device through the network. Coding techniques, latency and bandwidth requirements represents some of the key issues to be faced in the design of an effective rendering system. During this thesis the effects of adopting new coding techniques will be investigated in depth. Remote 3D graphics technology for CAD applications running in data centers is another interesting field of application of the methodology that will be experimented during this work.
