Descrizione Battery charging is one of the most substantial issues in battery management systems. A charger
typically includes three functions: 1) delivering charge to the battery;
2) optimizing the charge rate; and 3) terminating the charge.
The charge can be delivered to the battery through different charging "protocols".
In Lithium-Ion batteries, which are the most used battery chemistry in electronic devices the standard protocol il called constant current/constant voltage (CC/CV), although other charging schemes are possible and have been analyzed.
The most important parameter of a charge protocol for the user is clearly charge speed, which can be increased
by increasing the average current during charge, which however induces stress on the battery causing a premature aging and a resulting shorter lifetime (cycle efficiency).
In this thesis, using a MATLAB/Simulink model of a battery we want to assess, via simulation,
the cycle efficiency of different charge protocol schemes, by exploring different possible parameters of
each protocol, with the objective of finding the optimal protocol for various types of battery cells to be used in smartphones.
