On the use of microfluidics for the production of polymeric particles

Descrizione In recent years there has been a growing interest in the use of polymeric nanoparticles to enhance the solubility, and thus the availability, of poor water soluble drugs. A new way of producing these nanoparticles containing drug is the use of microfluidics devices. Microfluidics devices consist in micrometric channels characterized by the presence of junctions that create the dispersion of the polymer and drug into a continuous phase, often water with surfactant. The production of the dispersion is controlled by two mechanisms: shear stress in the continuous phase and surface tension of the droplet that promotes the coalescence. After the creation of the dispersion the droplets are polymerized with UV-light to create the nanoparticles. By encapsulating curcumin in these nanoparticles it is possible to enhance the solubility in water of this compound that has interesting anti-inflammatory properties and can be used in the treatment of various diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.
