Descrizione The thesis work is part of the “SYNCHRO-NET” European research project, which guarantees cost-effective robust solutions that de-stress the supply chain to reduce emissions and costs for logistics operations while simultaneously increasing reliability and service levels for logistics users.

To this end, the work foresees an in-depth analysis of the current state-of-the-art is smart steaming and real-time synchro-modal optimization solutions, coupled with innovative business models, that remove the barriers to adopting successful supply chain de-stressing and slow steaming strategies. Moreover, the thesis will provide e-Freight tools and smart coordination mechanisms that allow a complex synchro-modal supply chain to be planned and optimized effectively, both at the strategic level and in real-time. An automated real-time solution to this large scale NP-hard problem has never been implemented before positioning this work well beyond state of the art, including:
• ship, rail, barge and truck operations planning in real-time, as well as scheduling activity in the port and major terminals.
• the modelling of the main standalone components of the global logistics supply chain capable of keeping all real-time changes created by the decision process
• a dynamic de-stressing scheduler and simulator to de-risk the synchro-modal transport schedule, intelligently using available flexibility
By tackling these points, the tools developed will deliver massive savings in terms of cost and environmental impact, but will also provide the necessary feedback and response to facilitate analysis and impact of slow steaming strategies on the synchro-modal supply chain.
