Thesis type RESEARCH
Description In the Internet of Things (IoT) world, we are under a constant stream of messages, coming from various "smart objects" (e.g., thermostats, washing machines, weather stations, activity trackers, drink trackers) and from different services and Social Network (like Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, e-mail, etc.). All these notifications may be interesting by themselves, but taken together they risk to be a constant distraction and annoyance. Moreover, they are "raw data", typically, from which we cannot immediately derive any suggestion or pattern for personal improvements or for a better understanding of some aspects of our life. Things become further complicated by the presence of "smart objects" that are shared between groups of people or family members (like a TV or a washing machine). Thus, data coming from such devices/appliances can affect multiple persons and their behaviors.
The goal of this thesis is to collect all this data coming both from common Web services and applications and from IoT devices, to extract hidden patterns and/or perform some other kind of analysis. Three logical steps are expected to be completed in this work: (a) to install the needed (and provided) IoT devices in a familiar setting (e.g., your home or apartment) and develop the requested software for collecting in a structured way all this data; (b) gather the data for most of the thesis duration; (c) finally, clean, anonymize, and analyze the available data with some standard and consolidated data mining technique.
The outcome of the thesis, if satisfying, will be made freely available as Open Datasets, to be published for the benefit of the research community.
