Thesis type NUMERICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL
Description Raman spectroscopy is one of the most commonly used techniques for structural investigation of nanostructured (graphene, carbon nanotubes, nanodiamond, ...) as well as non nanostructured (anorphous carbon, glassy carbon, graphite, ...) carbon materials.
The relevant bibliography although apparently sound shows pitfalls when a closer look is taken. For instance a detailed analysis of the physical mechanisms (apart from Rayleigh contribution) determining the background signal on which the typical carbon-carbon bonds peaks are superimposed is lacking. Peak shapes and coexistence of several peaks of the same nature is another issue that needs to be duly tackled.
Thesis activity will be aimed to lay the foundations for a standardization of the analysis procedure and interpretation of Raman spectra of carbonaceous materials. The work will involve recording and analysing spectra odf several carbon materials (graphene, carbon nanotubes, carbon black, ...). Their critical comparison will lead to much needed input that will eventually lead to solve the existing problems.
