Description Diabetic neuropathy (DPN) is one of the most common and serious complications of diabetes. This pathology causes chronic damages to different types of nociceptors (i.e. the sensory neurons conveying pain sensations to the brain), whose mechanisms are still mostly unknown. Multi-marker 3D immunofluorescence imaging, that is a 3D microscopy technique where different fluorescent dyes are used to mark different types of nociceptors in a biological sample, has a major role in such investigations. Objective of this thesis is the design and development of software techniques for the automated analysis of such images, including techniques for the segmentation and counting of different types of neural cells, the 3D rendering of the biological volumes, etc.

Required skills Good basics of image processing, good programming skills, Matlab or C.
