Descrizione Background
----------
Different forces are shaping the way and the goal of Science in the new century. The Internet and its related technologies, combined with the philosophical postulate of openness in Science, is one of them: Internet increases and extends the openness of Science in new ways, from enabling open access to scientific resources to foster collaborations based on Web2.0 technologies.
As a consequence of such forces, Open Science and Science 2.0 movements have come into being and their development has been reinforced by recent calls for the global governance of science from European Institutions, which considered the transitions towards Open Science a fundamental step to foster knowledge circulation and thus “as a driver for faster and wider innovation”.
Task
----
The goal of this thesis is to exploit the use of Linked Data technologies on top of the Italian Institutional Research Information System (IRIS), and experiment new type of features for the users of IRIS, as demonstrator of the paradigm of Science 2.0 and Open Science. The features will be elicited from interaction with the Academic Libraries of Politecnico di Torino and University of Torino. Examples of innovative services are:automatic classification of research products, network of competences (“who does what and where”), researcher recommendation based on research topics.
The expected main outcomes of the thesis are:
- General introduction to Open Science and Science 2.0
- Elicitation of useful functionalities/services interacting with the libraries of Politecnico di Torino and Università di Torino
- Selection of one feature/service, based (also) on:
- study of the IRIS export utilities and interfaces
- state of the art of tools and techniques available for the technical realization
- Feature/service development
- Feature/service evaluation with end users
The thesis will be conducted under the joint supervision of the Softeng Group and the Nexa Center for Internet & Society.
The duration of the thesis is 6 months, plus one additional test month.
Note Candidates will undergo a selection based on CV and interview.
