Thesis type EXPERIMENTAL THESIS

Description Motivations:
This proposal is about the study of a platform to assist people suffering from Specific Learning Disabilities (SLDs), such as dyslexia, in enjoying TV shows and programs.
Activities of this Thesis will focus particularly on the study of novel user-friendly modalities to help disabled people interacting with modern TV and to fully enjoy subtitles and multimedia content provided along with TV channels (e.g., the “Televideo” portal).
Final outcomes will be delivered to stakeholders, families and medical associations that will evaluate them and use them as possible aids to their everyday life.

Goal of the thesis:
Study and design of a portal to be integrated within a platform offering services to help disabled people enjoying TV shows and programs. The portal will consist of both software (e.g., mobile app, app for smart TV) and hardware (e.g., custom DVB-T and HDMI devices and interfaces) components.
Services offered include, but are not limited to real-time subtitles specifically suitable for visually impaired and dyslexic people.
The candidate(s) will analyze state-of-the-art solutions, evaluating whether they are sufficient or not, will work with the stakeholders to define their desiderata and the requirements of the product, and will derive guidelines to offer optimized, and fully accessible, multimedia contents along with the regular TV broadcasting.

Learning outcomes:
The candidate will acquire a deep knowledge of multimedia content management, Specific Learning Disabilities and Assistive Technologies’ tools and products.

External/Industrial cooperations:
The research activities and the thesis are carried out in cooperation with the CINI National Lab on Assistive Technologies (http://www.consorzio-cini.it/index.php/it/lab-astech) and with the “Centro Ricerche e Innovazione Tecnologica” (CRIT) of RAI in Turin.
