Descrizione Currently, most of the large panels in body structure (roof panel, floor panel, dash panel, hood panel, etc.) are made of thin steel sheet metal which is less than 1 mm thick. These panels are very weak in resisting bending loads, hence reinforcements are provided to improve their bending stiffness and strength. With reinforcements, the steel panels are heavy and there is an opportunity to investigate alternative materials and structural configurations to reduce weight. One such alternative is aluminum sandwich construction. Objective: Investigate the weight reduction opportunity by replacing major steel automobile panels/reinforcements with aluminum sandwich construction.
