Thesis type EXPERIMENTAL/MODELLING

Description The thesis will be carried out at the Delft University of Technology ( TU Delft - Department of GeoScience & Engineering). The MSc project will be part of the SoSEAL (Soil Sealing by Enhance Aluminium and organic matter Leaching) project which aims at reducing the permeability of the subsoil via injection of reactants (eg. downstream dikes in the Netherlands, to reduce water infiltration and prevent dike from collapsing). To this aim, the use of micro-sized aluminium-organic matter (Al-OM) flocs will be studied. We propose the two following subjects:
1) Extensive characterization of Al-OM flocs/suspensions with respect to the floc size and the rheological properties. In addition, column experiments will be performed to determine the transport characteristics of the Al-OM flocs, the maximum transport distances that can be achieved, their distribution within the porous media and their effect on the permeability. All of these experiments will aid to design the pilot experiment carried out on a field site in the Netherlands.
2) Development of a model to describe Al-OM flocs transport in porous media and its effect on the permeability reduction and to design a field scale application of the SoSEAL technique. The radial model MNMs developed at the Politecnico di Torino for the simulation of nanoparticle injection in the subsoil can be used as a starting point.

Required skills Basic knowledge on transport phenomena, flow and transport in porous media. Previous experience in the laboratory is preferred (but not strictly necessary)
