Descrizione To deal with increasingly demanding services and the rapid growing in number of devices and traffic, 5G mobile networks need to provide extreme capacity, massive peak data rates and especially low latency. As a consequence, applications and services are required to move closer to the users, into so-called edge clouds. The recent years have witnessed a trend to centralize base station functionality through Cloud-Radio Access Networks (C-RAN), which bring baseband signal processing to edge clouds. As is known from conventional data centers, legacy transport protocols such as TCP are vastly suboptimal in such a setting, and special-purpose transport architectures are required to achieve ultra-low latencies.
The student will work in the development of novel net- work protocols for data centers with C-RAN function- alities. Specifically, the student will develop software- defined networking solutions within the scope of the project. To this end, hands on in Linux-based software and networking equipment is required as well as good knowledge with programming languages. During the internship, the student will acquire practical experience in multiple areas such as data center and cellular networks.
