keywords IMAGE PROCESSING, OBJECT IDENTIFICATION, SECURITY

Reference persons TIZIANO BIANCHI

Research Groups CCNE - COMMUNICATIONS AND COMPUTER NETWORKS ENGINEERING, ICT4SS - ICT FOR SMART SOCIETIES, Image Processing Lab (IPL)

Thesis type RESEARCH, INNOVATIVE

Description This thesis deals with a cutting-edge research topic in information science: the possibility of using random patterns formed by tiny spheres of liquid crystals integrated in common materials, like plastic of cellulose, as an innovative solution for physical object identification. The aim of the thesis is to analyze images of these liquid crystals, which, due to their optical properties, generate random colored patterns, and verify their security properties, like stability, high entropy, reproducibility, unpredictability.

Part of the activities of the thesis will be conducted in the labs of the Center for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) (https://wwwen.uni.lu/snt) of the University of Luxembourg, under the co-supervision of Dr. Gabriele Lenzini.

Required skills Image processing skills, Matlab programming. Perspective students should be fluent in English and with a critical mind, open to a cross-disciplinary approach.
