Description Focal vibration has been proposed as a feedback method in the myoelectric control of prosthetic devices. These feedback systems provide the subject with a vibration signal whose characteristics code simple information about the target force and/or movement of the robotic hand. In myoelectric-controlled prosthesis, vibrations are applied in proximity of the muscles used to control the prosthesis, thus close to the electrodes for EMG detection. A common problem of this feedback approach is the generation of vibration artifacts in the EMG signal. This is a relevant issue, considering that EMGs are used to control the prosthetic device. The aim of this project is to define the features of the vibration device and of the EMG detection system that allow a minimization of these vibration-induced artifacts. The specific activities within this Thesis include: (i) prototyping a simple system for vibration feedback and EMG detection and (ii) testing the effect of electrode-skin interface and front-end electronics on the rejection to movement artifacts. Possible developments or additional Thesis on this topic may include the development of algorithms for the identification and removal of vibration-induced stimulation artifacts.

This Thesis will be carried-out in collaboration with the Company BionIT Labs (LE) that develops myoelectric-controlled prosthesis (www.bionitlabs.com).
