Description The "Aether" communication system, developed in collaboration with Tierra Telematics, allows devices (whether mobile and fixed) located in environments that lack of WAN connectivity, to set up an ad hoc network, which exploits the movement of devices through the store-carry-and-forward communication paradigm, to allow data to be transparently propagated from one device to another. Such a network is called Delay/Disruption Tolerant Network (DTN), and is characterized by short-range communications between devices, unstable connections, variable topologies.
In such a network, end-to-end communication takes place through the exchange and the transport of "bundles" containing application messages. Software gateways receive messages from applications and encapsulate them in bundles, then letting them flow over the DTN. A different gateway is needed for each application protocol that we want to support (eg MQTT, HTTP).
The thesis proposal consists in the development of a generic gateway able to operate at the transport level (TCP and UDP), in order to support each application protocol in a unified and transparent way.
