keywords SEMICONDUCTOR LASERS

Reference persons GUIDO PERRONE

Research Groups Fibres and Optical Components

Thesis type SIMULATIVE AND EXPERIMENTAL

Description The proposed MSc thesis is focused on the study of photoelastic effects (refractive index change due to mechanical stresses) in high-power semiconductor lasers. In particular, it
will address near and far field and polarization purity analysis of the optical beams emitted both by unmounted and carrier-mounted laser chips. The main goals of the work is the detailed study of the photoelastic effects due to the mounting process of laser diodes and the subsequent laser beam optimization.
The proposed thesis mainly involves an experimental activity, which includes setting up a fairly complex measurement bench. In addition, simulation activities aimed at analyzing experimental data and optimizing optical beam properties will be conducted developing ad hoc codes in Matlab.
The MSc thesis is expected to last 6 to 9 months.

Required skills Fundamentals of semiconductor laser physics and of applied eletromagnetics. Matlab programming.
