Trussed arch bridges optimization

keywords STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS AND DESIGN

Reference persons GIUSEPPE CARLO MARANO

Description
Lattice arch bridges are commonly used to obtain large spans. They are efficient structures that offer
a wide range of geometries, materials and topologies. This thesis proposal aims to study the influence of
geometry and topology of the arch bridges on both their structural performances transmitted from the
maximum deflection and their structural weight.
We want to develop 2-D parametric models (and in the case also 3-D) of arch bridges are made using parametric modellers (for example Grasshopper) to interface with a finite element calculation code that evaluates the structural response (and the security). An external optimizer will have to operate on some parameters to be optimized (sections and some geometric parameters) modifying the parameters of the parametric model
Finally it will be interesting to evaluate a multi-objective optimization process on different typologies to examine the trade-offs between deflection and self-weight and assess what level of weight "savings" can be achieved
