Description Cities have a key role in being the place for facing climate change and making the transition toward sustainable development happen. The Agenda 2030, adopted in 2015 by the United Nations, created a new integrated sustainability paradigm based on 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The assessment of urban policies, strategies, and actions against the 17 SDGs is crucial for supporting decision-making to reduce our ecological footprint. However, the evaluation of SDGs implementation is a complex issue, since trade-offs exist among goals and no unique methodology is being recognised to be effective and universally valid. Moreover, given that urbanization is now a global-scale process, a sustainable planet depends on how cities grow, function, and respond to stress, urban issues are ‘mainstreamed’ across the other SDGs, making the role of cities and urban decision-makers disappear among all other targets.
The research should report the links of all the SDGs in relation to the urban context. Activities already being undertaken by local administrations and organizations should be presented and discussed along the literature reviews and case study collection. Finally, the research should identify gaps and opportunities for the definition of local strategies for SDGs implementation. The urban focus of this study aims highlight the SDGs framework capacity to bring together multiple sectors, actors and processes in new ways, develop participatory, accountable, and effective city governance to support rapid and equitable urban transformation.
