Design of innovative materials for laryingae prostheses

keywords BIOMATERIALS, PROSTHESIS, ANTIBACTERIAL

Research Groups 05-Bioingegneria Industriale

Description The main objectives of this research project are therefore:
- Development of artificial vocal cords with appropriate dimensional characteristics. A silicon-based composite material with improved conductivity will be developed. The manufacturing process must be modified and some tests must be conducted to verify that these changes do not affect the vibratory performance.
- Development of a surface coating with antifouling and antimicrobial properties in order to inhibit biofilm formation. For this purpose the PDMS based material will be modified with a two-step plasma process (Argon / plasma sulfobetaine methacrylate) in order to covalently crimp biomolecules with the desired properties. The functionalized samples will be characterized with a number of analytical techniques in order to evaluate the success of the functionalization and to assess whether the modification process influences the bulk properties of the silicone.
