Description Domestic heating, based on wood or methane, causes the release of particulate matter and carbon monoxide into the environment. These substances contribute to the environmental pollution. Furthermore, the same pollutants are produced by vehicles. The abatement of particulate matter and carbon monoxide represents, nowadays, one of the most stimulating challenges to reduce the release of these substances into the environment. In this scenario, the student will study nanostructured cerium oxide-based systems for the abatement of particulate matter and carbon monoxide. Specifically, the role of the physico-chemical properties of these materials (investigated through various analysis techniques such as FT-IR, XPS, XRD, FESEM, etc.) will be investigated and the correlation with the results of the catalytic activity will be one of the main objectives of the work. On the most promising catalysts, we will try to make an impregnation on different supports (synthetic and natural zeolites) to verify the effect of the dispersion of the catalyst.
