Design, numerical modeling and / or experimental verification of new types of acoustic/elastic metamaterials (European project FET Open BOHEME)
Reference persons FEDERICO BOSIA, ANTONIO GLIOZZI
Thesis type NUMERICA E SPERIMENTALE
Description The thesis will involve the study of the propagation of elastic waves in structured and/or periodic media (with the resulting diffraction effects, frequency band gaps, focusing, etc.) and their simulation through finite element software. Subsequently, different design criteria of new metamaterials based on innovative structures (chiral, labyrinthine, pentamode, tensegrity...) will be explored for the realization of optimized designs for lightweight solutions with simultaneous broadband low-frequency attenuation. Depending on the designed metamaterials, potential applications in seismics, acoustics, or non-destructive evaluation will be explored, and possibly laboratory tests carried out in the ultrasonic range.
Required skills useful notions: elastic waves, mechanics of materials, finite element modelling, ultrasound measurements
