Description The forecasting of convective storms is a fundamental issue in numerical weather prediction models; better understanding deep convective storms becomes even more paramount in a warming climate with extreme weather events becoming more and more frequent. The use of radar to construct three-dimensional storm structures is well established, and exist that generate storm statistics like echo-top height, characteristic cell size, areal precipitation, etc). In this thesis the ARPA-Piemonte radars together with geostationary infrared observations will be used to track and characterise thunderstorms in the Piedmont region. The ARPA software for the storm-tracking will be improved by introducing now-casting of the convective cell position. Statistics of the detailed three-dimensional morphology of thunderstorms will be collected and compared with outputs from high resolution cloud resolving model outputs for the same regions.
