Tesi all'estero (USA). Modeling and fabrication of implantable devices for drugs delivery

estero Thesis abroad

keywords BIOMEDICAL DEVICES, FEM MODELING, MECHANICAL DESIGN, MICROSYSTEMS - MEMS

Reference persons GIORGIO DE PASQUALE

Description Implantable devices for prolonged drug delivery usually feature a high concentration reservoir and a porous membrane that regulate the release rate. High concentration solutions or solid liquid dispersions in the reservoir can lead to increased pressure in the reservoir that can affect drug release, but more importantly the structural integrity of the device. The project entails the design and realization of an implantable capsule that features a pressure sensor and remote communication capabilities to evaluate osmotic pressures for extended periods of time. Experiments will be conducted first in vitro and then in vivo, with a subcutaneous implantation in rats. At the same time, a mathematical model has be developed, the experimental results will be used to validate the model. Modeling using finite element analysis is recommended.
