Descrizione To this day, drug-releasing implantable devices in the market require surgery for removal and replacement.  The ability to transcutaneously refill implantable devices prolongs the implant life and treatment duration. However, current FDA-approved refillable implants are refilled with liquid drug formulations. Thus, reducing implant loading efficiency, drug stability and requiring large liquid volumes for density packing. Solid drug refill can address these problems by improving loading efficiency, drug stability and density packing. Our lab has successfully transcutaneouly loaded our implants using a peristaltic pump and our patented refill implant design.  The project entails the creation of a simpler loading system, that can be handheld and obviates large pumps and electricity. The goal of the project, is to create a handheld device for transcutaneous refill that can be used anywhere in the world. The lab offers several rapid prototyping tools such as 3D printers, CNC milling machine etc. The student is expected to design and test different prototypes of the refilling device. Parameters such as drug loading efficiency, feasibility of use, failure rate (clogging) amongst others need to be determined.
