Design and development of a Muon detector

keywords DETECTOR, FPGA

Reference persons LUCA STERPONE

Research Groups DAUIN - GR-05 - ELECTRONIC CAD & RELIABILITY GROUP - CAD

Description The thesis consists on the design and development of a in-expensive muon detector based on a plastic scintillator and a FPGA control board. All the materials will be provided within the project Cosmic Ray Observer. The main part of the detector consists of a 5x5x1cm solid plastic scintillator instrumented by a silicon photomultiplier (SiMP) to detect scintillation light emitted from charged particles as they pass through the scintillator. The signal generated by the SiMP is monitored by the FPGA device that counts the number of events and measure the Muons event rate. A scholarship of 2,400€ is offered to the master thesis student candidate.

Required skills Practical Skills: PCB, soldering, interface cables and oscilloscope control, VHDL language, C/C++ and Python programming language.

Notes A scholarship of 2,400€ is granted to the master thesis student candidate.
