Description To minimize intrusion in the structures’ serviceability, inspection and monitoring methods should be nondestructive, straightforward and minimally invasive. They should be capable of yielding rapid and accurate inspection results allowing an adequate response from the asset manager.
This proposal concerns the development of non-contact and material-independent techniques for structural monitoring and identification. The use of existing correlation algorithms on different structural elements will be deepen primarily to describe the displacement field on surfaces and then to depict the related strain contour bands. In parallel, for a quick evaluation of the digital correlation results, monitoring devices will be employed.
The solutions will be developed moving from consolidated local implementations of digital image correlation to assess innovative larger scale applications. Furthermore, the use of optimization techniques will be also deepen to identify through finite element codes the unknown and sometimes changing-in-service material parameters through the experimental data provided by laboratory tests and digital image correlation.
This activity will be developed using the Matlab environment and finite element codes, considering also their coupled implementation. Specifically, the student will have to integrate numerical solutions and experimental tests (scaled laboratory and possibly real world) to implement some new features for innovative applications.
