Atomic Force Microscopy characterization of static and dynamic mechanical properties of natural structures for bioinspiration

keywords ATOMIC FORCE MICROSCOPY (AFM), BIO INSPIRED MATERIALS, NANOINDENTATION

Reference persons FEDERICO BOSIA, MAURO TORTELLO

Thesis type EXPERIMENTAL, IN LAB

Description Experimental investigation of the static and dynamic mechanical properties of biological specimens by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and related techniques. These studies will be conducted in view of the realization of artificial, “bioinspired” materials with superior mechanical properties. Examples of materials to be investigated are shells, arthropod exoskeletons, and tissues, but any other material/sample that could be relevant with respect to the above purpose can be considered.
The techniques to be used will be contact mode, tapping mode, force modulation microscopy (FMM), force vs distance curves and nanoindentation, phase imaging and lateral force microscopy (LFM).
