Descrizione Metal lattice structures fabricated by additive manufacturing processes have wide range of applications in the mechanical field. The ability to provide high energy absorption in small volumes, in particular, has potential interest for vehicles, aeronautics and space engineering. The technical university of Darmstadt and Politecnico di Torino are currently commonly working on the energy absorption potential behavior of truss lattice cells under impact loads.
Thesis 1) Numerical modeling by FEM of lattice structures with different topologies. The goal is to evaluate the energy absorption under dynamic loads with variable strain rates. A comprehensive literature research shall be performed, focusing on the state of the art of simulation of high impact loading.
Thesis 2) Experimental validation of the available models. The literature research shall include the previously performed results and provide an overview of the state of the art of the current experimental setup for the assessment of lattice energy absorption. One setup shall be selected in accordance with the available testing facilities of Politecnico di Torino and a design of experiment as well as sample design shall be proposed accordingly, accounting for the manufacturing restrictions.
