Description The work to be carried out consists in the analysis of the thermal-hydraulic and electrical experimental data of a full-scale, short-length high temperature superconductor (HTS) sample. It is representative of the conductors adopted for fusion magnets and was recently tested in SULTAN, a facility located at the Swiss Plasma Center in Villigen (in the north of Switzerland). In the sample, a transition form superconducting to normal state (quench) was artificially induced: this kind of transients is of paramount importance because it can lead to severe consequences in the fusion reactor magnets. While the dynamic of this phenomenon is pretty well known in low temperature superconductors, there are very few experimental data available for the same transient in HTS; therefore, these analysis are very important to understand its dynamics and the potential future application of such innovative conductors. The thesis will be in the framework of the research activities carried out by the NEMO Group within the European consortium for nuclear fusion EUROfusion, with particular reference to the design of the magnet system of DEMO, the demonstrator that should produce electricity from controlled nuclear fusion.
