Descrizione Many additive manufacturing processes are under development in the last years to realize new components with complex geometries, saving materials and allowing the production of very different component with the same machine. In particular, the use of metallic materials in additive manufacturing is of great importance because of the wide range of engineering applications.
Two different mock-ups of an innovative heat exchanger, i.e. a copper cavity for Gyrotron for fusion application equipped with a mini-channels cooling system, have been realized with two manufacturing processes: traditional subtracting machining and additive manufacturing. The two mock-ups will be tested at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), using two fluids as coolant, water and air, in order to compare the cooling performances obtained with the two manufacturing processes. The student will first analyse the test results of the two mock-ups, addressing the possible difference in the thermal-hydraulic performance of the samples related to their manufacturing. Then, a computational thermal-fluid dynamics model for both samples, using the commercial software STAR-CCM+, will be developed and validated against the experimental data.
