Description The WIVERN (WInd VElocity Radar Nephoscope) mission, hinged upon a 94 GHz conically scanning Doppler radar for the measurement of horizontal winds, has been selected for Phase 0 studies in the ESA Earth Explorer program. By exploiting an End-to-End instrument simulator developed in matlab the instrument performances of wind measurements will be assessed. Particular attention will be given to at least two of the following aspects: uncertainties introduced by pointing, by wind shear, by non uniform beam filling and by cross-talk between the two polarization channels. WIVERN observations will be simulated via global meteorological outputs and rhigh spatial resolution regional models. Instrument performances will be discussed as a function of radar parameters like pulse length, incidence angle, antenna pattern, separation between pulses, sensitivity, etc.
Required skills Excellent programming level in Matlab / python.
Good knowledge of English (written and spoken).
Knowledge of weather and / or satellite orbits and / 0 radar and / or signal processing.
