Description In recent years, the world's major challenges have focused on life in the urban habitat. In fact, according to the United Nations report (World Urbanization Prospects 2018), two-thirds of the world population will live in the city, to the detriment of the rural population destined to radically decrease. This implies the need to foresee, in time, an efficient production and supply system to avoid food crises. In addition to urban growth forecasts, climate change may endanger crops due to effects such as prolonged heat waves, sudden floods, sudden changes in temperature and conditions that impact both humans and the environment (flora and fauna ).
Thanks to technological developments in the lighting and agricultural production sector, today it is possible to grow in those places where previously it was not possible, for example inside buildings, under or on roofs, in a completely controlled environment, with continuous annual production.
LEDs and hydroponic systems have given architects the opportunity to experiment with new hybrid architectures, occupying those structures or surfaces that are often underexploited or abandoned (industries, basements, roofs, hospitals, etc.) in order to create functional mixes between production, retail, and housing.
