Dealing with Field of View of HMDs in immersive flight simulators

Description For many application scenarios indeed such a (limited) FOV is more than adequate to fulfill the required task. In some other applications instead, such as cockpit simulators for pilots training, the user has the need to frequently have a glance of details out of the 100° FOV or even behind him/her. Even though it is definitely possible to perform such movements, the weight of the headset can induce neck-strain on the user, that as a result may tend to limit the number and extension of such movements, with impact on simulation fidelity and training effectiveness.
In this thesis the objective is to explore the possibility to warp and/or distort the rendered image in an HMD to support frequent and rapid corner of the eye quick looking out of the available FOV. Since, the idea is to take advantage of the temporary blindness induced by saccadic movement of the eyes, an eye-tracking HMD will be used in the project.
As an application scenario, a flight application will be considered in a motion-enabled simulation platform available at the VR@POLITO lab.
