Description Network monitoring is a fundamental component of many network management tasks, such as service placement, load balancing, etc. The goal of monitoring the network is to infer the current state of network elements. Network tomography has been proposed as an innovative way for inferring the current network state causing minimal monitoring overhead. In this thesis, we will extend the network tomography approach with machine learning techniques to go beyond its current fundamental limitations. Moreover, we will apply the proposed monitoring techniques to specific network management tasks and demonstrate their benefits in modern networks, such as Software-Defined Networks.
