Catalysts and sustainable materials for the reduction of gaseous pollutants in indoor environments

keywords ENVIRONMENTAL CATALYSIS, GASEOUS POLLUTANTS, INDOOR POLLUTION

Reference persons MARCO PIUMETTI

Thesis type EXPERIMENTAL

Description The aim of this thesis proposal lies within the realm of environmental sustainability and heterogeneous catalysis, aiming to develop innovative catalysts for the reduction of gaseous pollutants, particularly volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and carbon monoxide (CO), at low temperatures for indoor air purification, with the goal of enhancing the breathed air quality in enclosed spaces. Specifically, the experimental part will focus on the study and synthesis of catalysts of various natures for the reduction of different target molecules, such as VOCs (propylene, ethylene, aromatic compounds, etc.) and low-temperature CO. Analytical techniques (such as nitrogen physisorption, X-ray diffraction, spectroscopic, and microscopic techniques) will be employed to investigate their chemical and physical properties. The obtained catalysts will be tested on a laboratory-scale system simulating a real contaminated gas stream to demonstrate the effectiveness of this catalytic system and evaluate its catalytic activity.
