Descrizione The candidate should understand the fundamentals of the scavenging process in a two-stroke engine with a free-piston layout in order to optimize trapping and scavenging efficiency using 3D CFD tools. The free-piston layout creates an atypical piston motion due to the absence of the crank mechanism, which is typically associated with the in-cylinder pressure variation cycle to cycle. After acquiring basic concepts about two-stroke engines and related performance parameters, the candidate will be guided through the design optimization process, analysing both the scavenging and injection processes. This involves varying the injector position and timing, as well as the piston and port geometries.
This thesis aims to find the optimal trade-off between effectively cleaning the exhaust gas from the cylinder and maximizing the trapping of fresh air. Additionally, the candidate could, at a later stage, introduce the combustion phase into the CFD model to examine the influences of scavenging improvement on combustion kinetics.
