Descrizione The use of "green" reducing agents in direct reduction furnaces represents one of the most promising ways to reduce CO2 emissions in steel production. Hydrogen could replace fossil fuels in the reduction of iron oxide pellets into pure iron avoiding any CO2 generation in the most CO2-intensive phase of production. However, the low density of hydrogen poses significant challenges in terms of transportation and storage. There is considerable interest in the possibility of directly feeding ammonia into the furnace, where its cracking into hydrogen and nitrogen is promoted by high temperatures and the presence of iron (as a catalyst). Therefore, the direct use of ammonia in the iron oxide reduction processes would allow for combining CO2 emission reduction with the cost-effectiveness of steel production processes.
